Pain from dental injection ranks as the leading cause of fear during dental visits and an estimated 9-15% of Americans avoid visiting their local practice due to this anxiety, totaling over 40 million people. This fear stems from either ‘horror’ stories told by others or a former unpleasant experience. We want to change that.
Most of us can relate to having a painful experience with injections in the past due to a culmination of time pressure and desensitization of patient discomfort by a dental professional. Since painful problems such as abscesses and injuries are common in a dentist office, it is easy for a practitioner to no longer be able to relate to the fear and angst patients feel when inoculation takes place.
Our main priority is your comfort which is why we apply a topical gel anesthetic before injection to provide a pain-free experience. The gel is composed of three highly potent numbing agents, Lidocaine, Prilocaine and Tetracaine, which work in unison to completely eradicate any feeling in the gums. Once applied to the designated area on the tissue, the gel is left in the mouth for 3-4 minutes before being wiped off.* Subsequent to application the injection is administered and after the procedure is finished, most patients report having had no feeling of a shot at all.
While most are typically used to prevent pain from oral shots, topical anesthetics are employed to also decrease pain during scaling or stitch removal, prevent gagging during an X-ray or tray placement, alleviate discomfort from tooth extraction, and make teeth cleanings more enjoyable. Please consult your hygienist if dental cleanings bother you and the gel will be made available during this procedure in order to make your experience as pleasant as possible.
Numbing gel must be accompanied by an injection for anesthetic purposes and cannot be used on its own as it is designed for external use only. For more complex dental work, an anesthetic must be injected via a syringe in addition to gel use. Our goal is your satisfaction which is why we guarantee every patient will feel as relaxed and at ease as possible while dental procedures are being performed.
*For those who have had the numbing gel prior and believe that “it did not work on me”, most likely the gel was not applied long enough for the numbing action to take full effect.
