“A very pleasant experience…”
Marleton, New Jersey
As a West Chester, PA dental practice, we are aware of the negative stigma that accompanies the phrase “root canal treatment.” But, did you know that root canals are a common procedure that are quite effective at alleviating the pain of a serious toothache? At Briglia Dental Group, we take great care to make sure we provide comfortable therapies the restore oral health and prevent the need for extractions whenever possible. If you are suffering from pain or swelling from an infected tooth, it is important to seek care as soon as possible to save the natural tooth.
Root canal treatment, or endodontic therapy, is recommended when the pulp of a tooth has become infected. The pulp chamber is home to the nerve endings, blood vessels, and connective tissue of the tooth. When decay or injury reach this innermost area of the tooth, it can result in deep pain and sensitivity. Because it’s almost always best to save the natural tooth structure, a root canal and crown is the only way to eliminate the infection and restore functionality to the tooth.
Common reasons for root canal treatment:
Once we recommend root canal therapy, the initial reaction of many patients is to ask, “Do root canals hurt?” The answer is no. Root canals are a straightforward procedure that are quite like traditional fillings. Because we offer several types of dental sedation at Briglia Dental Group, we can make sure the entire process is as comfortable as possible.
Root canal therapy usually requires anywhere from 2-3 appointments. During your first visit, we’ll assess the tooth and address any pain that you are dealing with from the infection and prescribe antibiotics. You will then return for your next appointment to perform the root canal.
The first step in the root canal is to numb the area that is being treated. Sedation can also be administered as needed to help you relax. Then, we access the pulp chamber by a drilling a small hole in the tooth to remove the infected material from inside the tooth. Next, the root canals are cleaned out and dried before we apply a healing medication.
In the final appointment, we’ll fill the tooth with a rubber-like material to prevent bacteria from re-entering. We’ll then seal off the canals and protect the tooth from further damage by placing a dental crown on it.If you are experiencing pain and sensitivity and think you might need a root canal, please call Briglia Dental Group at (610) 615 0160 to schedule an appointment.

Dr. Briglia will review your past dental x-rays or take new updated digital x-rays in order to diagnose any problems that cannot be seen clinically. We’ll review your past medical and dental history, and complete a clinical examination which includes a TMJ/Jaw Joint exam, an oral cancer screening, a tooth by tooth exam, a check for periodontal gum disease, and a check for bone loss around your teeth. If you don’t have current x-rays, whether we’ll take new ones on your first visit really depends upon your dental history. We may recommend taking new x-rays to get a complete look at your teeth. X-rays allow us to check for bone fractures, cysts, tumors, lesions, and sinus issues.
If it’s appropriate, you may be able to have your teeth cleaned the same day as your first appointment. If we diagnosed that you have gum disease and bone loss, we’ll review treatment options with you at that time. In general, your first appointment will not include any dental treatments or cleanings.
