Revitalize Your Smile With Gold Inlays and Onlays

Sometimes, a tooth is too damaged for a filling to fix, but not so damaged that it should be shaved down for a dental crown. If you have a damaged or decayed tooth that is affecting your smile and your quality of life, a gold inlay or onlay may be the solution you need. These beautiful and versatile restorations are placed by our West Chester, PA Family dentist, Dr. Ron Briglia. Briglia Dental Group is here to give your teeth the best chance to look their best and support your oral health.

What Are Gold Inlays and Onlays?

Gold inlays and onlays, also called indirect fillings, are restorative measures that can return form and function to your teeth. Gold inlays are designed to fill in cavities in the spaces between the cusps of the teeth. Gold onlays, also known as partial crowns, can fill cavities as well as rebuild the surfaces of those teeth. Unlike traditional dental crowns, onlays won’t cover the entire tooth, preserving most of its structure.

The Benefits of Gold Inlays and Onlays

Durability: Gold inlays and onlays are known for their longevity and can last up to 30 years or more with proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups. The gold material is resistant to wear and tear, making it an ideal solution for repairing damaged teeth.

Non-Toxic – In its metallic form, pure gold is non-toxic and inert. This means your gold inlay or onlay won’t react with your body’s chemistry to produce adverse effects and harm you over time.

Comfort: The procedure for placing a gold inlay or onlay is not painful. Your West Chester family dentist will numb the area with a local anesthetic to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the process. The custom-made design of the gold inlay or onlay will secure a precise and comfortable fit, reducing the chances of sensitivity or discomfort after the procedure.

Versatility: Gold inlays and onlays can be used to repair a variety of dental issues, including damaged, decayed, or broken teeth. They can also be used as a replacement for amalgam or composite fillings that have become worn or damaged over time.

Aesthetics: Gold inlays and onlays are custom-made to fit each tooth. Unlike amalgam fillings, your gold fillings won’t sustain your natural teeth over time. Additionally, despite the normally vibrant color of gold, gold inlays and onlays are customized to blend as seamlessly with your natural teeth as possible, making them a beautiful solution for repairing damaged teeth.

Placing Gold Inlays and Onlays

Initial Consultation

Before you have your inlays or onlays placed, Dr. Briglia will have you attend an initial consultation. Your consultation will consist of a thorough exam that includes X-rays, a review of your medical history, and questions about your smile goals. The information your West Chester dentist gathers will allow him to determine if inlays or onlays are right for you.

Your initial consultation is a great time to ask any questions you may have. Dr. Briglia will answer them honestly to increase your comfort and help you make the most knowledgeable decision. If you’re feeling nervous about having inlays or onlays placed, we can provide sedation dentistry options.

Preparation & Design

To begin the inlay and onlay placement process, your West Chester family dentist, Dr. Briglia will apply a local anesthetic to the soft tissues around the affected teeth. Then, he’ll clean the damaged or decayed area of the tooth. Once all decayed or damaged tooth material is removed, we’ll take digital images and impressions of your smile to serve as the blueprints for your custom-made inlay or onlay.  A temporary inlay or onlay will be placed until you return for your permanent restoration.

Placing Your Inlay or Onlay

When you return to our West Chester dental office, we’ll show you your new inlay or onlay.

If it’s to your liking, Dr. Briglia will check the fit of the restoration, then bond it to the affected tooth. If it’s an inlay, he’ll place it between the cusps of the tooth. If it’s an onlay, he’ll place it over the cusps. Finally, we’ll polish the restoration, and your new smile will be ready.
