Obstructive Sleep Apnea Therapy in West Chester, PA

(610) 615 0160

Millions of Americans suffer from the debilitating effects of sleep apnea.  A simple google search for potential causes and treatments can lead people in many different directions. Fortunately, a sleep aid from your dentist can help. Oral appliance therapy is one way that the team at Briglia Dental Group in West Chester, PA is helping patients finally get a good night’s sleep.

What is obstructive sleep apnea?

When we breathe, oxygen passes through the nose, mouth, and throat and ultimately ends up in the lungs. When this happens, the area in the back of the throat can collapse inward, but the muscles around it dilate to keep the airway open. If there is a disturbance in this process, the airway can be temporarily blocked, causing an apnea episode. If these episodes occur five or more times per hour, a patient is said to have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Obstructive sleep apnea can increase your risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and obesity.

Symptoms include:

  • Daytime fatigue
  • Chronic, loud snoring
  • Momentary pauses in breath during sleep
  • Sore throat and dry mouth in the morning
  • Headaches upon waking
  • Insomnia
  • High blood pressure
  • Irritability
  • Depression
  • Difficulty concentrating

There are a variety of different causes or risk factors for obstructive sleep apnea, including:

  • Enlarged tonsils
  • Obesity
  • Male
  • Age (40-60 years old)
  • Smoking or tobacco use

OSA treatment options

One of the most common and potentially effective treatments for obstructive sleep apnea is CPAP. CPAP or continuous positive airway pressure) is a machine that delivers air pressure to a person via a mask that is worn while sleeping. Unfortunately, compliance with CPAP therapy is very low, with over half of the patients discontinuing use of it in less than a year. We offer patients with a more comfortable alternative – oral appliance therapy.

Oral appliance therapy using a TAP device is an effective way to treat mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. The adjustable device works by repositioning the lower jaw forward to prevent the tongue and soft tissue from blocking the airway. TAP appliances are custom fit, allowing enough room for the tongue and the lips to close, while still maintaining an open airway.

Real Patients - Real Results

I had known about my sleep issues for some time, but it wasn’t until I had a sleep test performed that I realized I was not getting a good night’s rest, waking up on average several dozen times per hour! Not good.

The doctor who performed the sleep study naturally recommended a CPAP machine, but I wasn’t ready for such a constricting, radical device, not to mention the potential health and safety aspects of it. I had heard about dental appliances being made that might allow me to breathe easier and sleep more soundly without all of the baggage associated with a CPAP. After doing some searching online for dentists in the Chester County area, Dr. Briglia seemed to fit the bill. I scheduled my appointment and was very impressed with his knowledge of the product, especially the fact that he uses one himself. Measurements were taken, and the appliance ordered.

Fast forward a few weeks, and my fitting was scheduled. Dr. Briglia did a thorough job going over it with me, how to use and adjust it, etc. First night was a learning process. Took a bit of time to get used to it, but I noticed right away how much better I felt the next morning. After several days, not only had the appliance become a part of my sleeping routine, but I was remembering dreams much more vividly. It also helped that my snoring was far less pronounced and disruptive to my wife. Happy Wife = Happy Life folks….

Interesting side note is just last week, I had a pretty sore throat, so I slept without the appliance for several nights so I could use throat lozenges and sprays. In the morning, I noticed right away how less soundly I had slept the night before. Couldn’t wait for the throat problems to clear up so I could go back to using the appliance. In fact, I even ordered a spare one for travel and backup purposes. I don’t ever want to be without one again!

If you have dental x-rays that were taken within the last 12 months, we’ll ask you to call your previous dental practice to have them send us any records or x-rays they have on file. If you don’t have current x-rays, whether we’ll take new ones on your first visit really depends upon your dental history. We may recommend taking new x-rays to get a complete look at your teeth. X-rays allow us to check for bone fractures, cysts, tumors, lesions, and sinus issues.

If it’s appropriate, you may be able to have your teeth cleaned the same day as your first appointment. If we diagnosed that you have gum disease and bone loss, we’ll review treatment options with you at that time. In general, your first appointment will not include any dental treatments or cleanings.
